Pacent: Japanese Walking for iPhone
Walk the Japanese way: 3 minutes brisk, 3 easy.
A coach calls every change, so the phone can stay in your pocket. Your targets come from your own 30-second pace test, and your plan runs 22 weeks, with dates.
The 3 minutes slow / 3 minutes fast rhythm flies by. The app guides me with audio cues so I don't have to keep looking at my phone.

What you get
The 3-and-3 method, coached
Three minutes brisk, three minutes easy, five times over, about 30 minutes, three to five days a week. A coach calls every change, even with your phone in your pocket.
Targets set from your own pace
A 30-second pace test builds your walking profile, and your brisk and easy targets are set in steps per minute. Brisk means brisk for you.
A dated 22-week plan
Five stages on the calendar with a re-check walk every 4 weeks, then a fresh block every month.
Works with the phone locked
You still hear every cue, and a Live Activity counts down the interval on your Lock Screen.
What early testers say
The 3 minutes slow / 3 minutes fast rhythm flies by. The app guides me with audio cues so I don't have to keep looking at my phone.
I discovered Japanese interval walking through Pacent. I sweat more in 30 minutes than in an hour of normal walking, and it's easy on the knees!
The interface is clean and gets straight to the point. The session stats are clear. A great way to build cardio without running.

The idea behind it
The method is Interval Walking Training from Shinshu University. In the original trial (Nemoto et al., Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 2007), 246 adults with a mean age of 63 walked this way for five months and improved more than steady walkers (listing: peak oxygen uptake +9%, systolic blood pressure -9 mmHg, knee flexion strength +17%). Results vary; not medical advice.
